Program Description:

Volcano San Jose
For years, expats and foreigners have flocked to Costa Rica for its beautiful scenery and unique work culture. The booming tourism industry in San Jose has turned it into a popular destination for travelers from around the world and made it into an incredibly diverse city. Global Experiences’ internship program in San Jose allows you to experience everything about the culture of Costa Rica all while gaining valuable career experience with a tailored internship.

San Jose is a city full of art, awe-inspiring architecture, and bustling commerce. The capital city of Costa Rica is known as one of the main focal points of political and economic activity in all of Central America. In terms of population, the city is relativity small, but nearly a million people commute to the center of the city every weekday to work in the many thriving industries of San Jose. Some of the most popular internship placements include business, environmental, engineering, NGOs, and many more.

In San Jose, going with the flow is the norm. The popular national saying “Pura Vida” means “pure life” and that’s the way Costa Ricans like to live. Locals value personal relationships and treating others with respect. Giving gifts is also an important aspect of the culture. During the summer, there is always a reason or holiday to celebrate.

Global Experiences provides you with a tailored internship in your approved career field. Your tuition also covers centrally located accommodations and social events. Throughout your program, we take you and your fellow interns on social excursions to allow you to experience San Jose and the local culture. You will also have free time during your program to travel on your own. Set yourself apart from your peers with an international internship in Costa Rica.

Housing: Single room in shared apartment

Our San José program housing is by far one of the best student living in Costa Rica. It is a brand new modern student residence located in the University area of San Pedro Montes de Oca. The flat is shared with other Global Experiences interns and sometimes mixed with other students from local universities. Housing is a single ensuite room in a shared 3-4 bedroom flat and includes a shared kitchen, WiFi, balcony, and a washer and dryer. There is 24/7 security and on-site support services in a sealed housing building with great communal areas including a cinema, games room, BBQ terrace, and sun lounges. Public transportation, shops, and cafes are easily accessible!

Researching this Program

Many affiliate providers typically will only list minimal information in their brochure above within the OEA database of approved programs as all current information is hosted on their website. Please use the links provided above to research the program information on the affiliate provider's website.

Affiliate Provider Programs

Check out our Affiliate Provider page for more general information about what an affiliate provider is, the program and cost structure & more. Please note that the "Fact Sheet" listed above may list majors or minors under the "Areas of Study" parameter. It's important to understand that these are simply suggested areas of study, which indicates that this program may offer one or several courses within this discipline. Additionally, as course offerings can change often, the program may offer one or more courses within an area of study that is not listed in this section. Students should not rely solely on this "areas of study" section when determining whether or not a study abroad program is a good academic fit for them; it is the student's responsibility to look at the specific list of courses offered by the host university (see below) to determine whether or not courses are available within their interests and/or area(s) of study.

Application Process

Any student wishing to participate in an affiliate provider program is required to complete an additional application with the Office of Education Abroad in order to receive approval to participate in the program. Please visit our Application Process page for more information. Note that students who do not receive approval from the OEA to participate in the program will not receive academic credit, will not be able to access their financial aid or scholarships and will not have access to OEA Services.

Academic Credit

Refer to our Academic Credit page for more information on how students will be working with their academic departments to determine what UNC Charlotte equivalent course credit they will receive for the courses they take abroad.

Money Matters

It's important to understand the cost structure of an Affiliate Provider program and to then research the estimated costs of each expense. Check out our Money Matters section on our website to learn more about how financial aid works, search for scholarship opportunities and more.
