MARKMAPT 2018 Postcard

Overview

Students will explore Marketing in two different global environments: a thriving North African city and a European capital. Local business leaders will share their success stories and we will visit places that capture the culture of the country. We will explore the cultural, social, legal, political, geographic and technological aspects of how the people in these two cities interact in the global marketplace.
 
UNC Charlotte will coordinate with a third party organization, ISP, to organize certain arrangements of this program.

Program Pre-Requisites

Successful applicants will satisfy the pre-requisites established by the program.

  • Sophomore standing or above

Special Considerations

Students must be ready to exercise flexibility regarding the planned activities and have physical/mental endurance and enthusiasm to maintain an active schedule, including long days, as part of their participation in this program.

Additional Information

Please keep in mind that because this program operates on a rolling admissions basis, it may fill up before the final application or confirmation deadlines. Interested students are encouraged to complete their application as soon as possible. 
 
Scholarships in the amount of $1,000.00 are available to confirmed program participants who are Belk College of Business majors. If awarded a scholarship, no action is required on your part to apply the funds to the cost of the program. If you are unsure if you are eligible, please confer with the Belk College of Business. Contact the Faculty Director for information on scholarship availability. Scholarship recipients are still required to pay the $1,000 deposit by the confirmation deadline in order to hold their place in the program.

Students interested in participating in a UNC Charlotte short-term faculty-led study abroad program are not required to complete Study Abroad 101 before beginning an application for the program, but are strongly encouraged to do so to gain an in-depth introduction to the study abroad process and resources.

Academics Tab Content

General Information

  • Credit will be granted for coursework and travel and will be issued by UNC Charlotte
  • The international experience supplements the appropriate UNC Charlotte course
  • All students will receive UNC Charlotte credit and A-F grades for this program
  • All grades from abroad will count towards your cumulative GPA
  • Students must be present for all program activities including any class sessions held before or after the travel component.

Course Information

This program offers credit for the following:

MKTG 3000: Topics in Marketing: Global Marketing Practicum: Casablanca and Lisbon Edition (3 credit hours)

Emphasis on the contrast between a mature market and one that is still developing. Elements of the marketing environment including culture, social, legal, political, geographic and technological will be explored. The benefit of the course being taught on site is to address these topics in two countries, Portugal and Morocco, operating in two different market groups and currencies. Emphasis will be given to creativity in marketing within mature markets.
  • Completion of MKTG 3110 with a grade of C or above is strongly preferred

Course Selection and Registration

  • This study abroad program is a component of an on-campus Spring term course
  • Confirmed participants must register for the appropriate section of the Spring semester course after the confirmation deadline in order to participate
  • This course section will not become available for registration until the weeks following the confirmation deadline, which will likely be after registration opens
  • This course section should be closed so that only confirmed program participants may register in it

Tuition for Study Abroad Courses

Spring Break programs are part of an academic course taught during the Spring semester on the UNC Charlotte campus. The international experience supplements the on-campus UNC Charlotte course. This means:
  • Tuition, grading, and credit hours for this course are part of your regular Spring semester course schedule and are processed like any other on-campus course.
  • Confirmed participants will need to register for the appropriate Spring semester course section in order to participate in the study abroad.
  • Tuition and fees for the course tied to the study abroad program are separate and in addition to the study abroad program fee.
Additional information on registration and grading is available in the application and communicated to confirmed participants in greater detail in the weeks following the confirmation deadline.

Tentative Itinerary

The course tied to the study abroad program will be part of students’ class schedule for the Spring semester. Please contact the Faculty Director for details about how to register for the proper course section after the confirmation deadline. Students should be prepared to attend mandatory class meetings on UNC Charlotte’s campus before and after the program abroad.

In addition to any class meetings required by the Faculty Director, confirmed participants will be required to attend a pre-departure orientation prior to travel. The orientation is hosted by the Office of Education Abroad and will cover academics, culture and adjustment, health and safety, and more.

Participants must be ready to exercise flexibility regarding the planned activities and have physical/mental endurance and enthusiasm to maintain an active schedule, including long days. Students must be in residence for the entirety of the program and attend all program activities.

Flights and Travel

Please do not make any binding travel arrangements until your participation in the program is confirmed AND you receive clearance from both the Office of Education Abroad and your Faculty Director to do so. 
 
Confirmed participants will consult with the Faculty Director for information on recommended flights and meeting times, but will be responsible for their own travel arrangements. Participants must be in residence for the entirety of the program and attend all program activities.
 
All participants in this program are required to travel on a group flight from Casablanca to Lisbon which will be arranged by ISP (the program provider). The cost of this flight is included in the program fee. Participants are responsible for their own airfare from the U.S. to Casablanca, and return from Lisbon back to the U.S. The Faculty Director and the OEA will communicate required flight and meeting time information in the weeks following the confirmation deadline.

Housing

Accommodations will be provided throughout the program. Rooms will be shared occupancy but a single room is available for an additional cost to the student. The cost of a shared room is included in the program fee.

Meals not included in the program fee are the responsibility of the participant, to be paid individually and in addition to the program fee.

Program Costs and Payment Schedule

Please review the program Budget Sheet for the total program fee, payment schedule, payment policies, cost inclusions, and other cost considerations. It is extremely important that you research and understand all costs and payment deadlines associated with this program before confirming your intent to participate.

Note that while it may be possible to defer other program payments for financial aid or scholarships, the deposit is non-deferrable and cannot be broken up into smaller payments over time. The deposit must be paid by the confirmation deadline to hold your spot in the program. Students are responsible for ensuring they are able to meet the financial responsibilities of this program before confirming their intent to participate. 

Making Payments

All payments should be made online via the study abroad portal per the schedule in the Budget Sheet. Please refer to the application portal for instructions on making payments. If you need assistance in submitting a payment, please contact the Office of Education Abroad.

Financial Aid

Financial aid for which you qualify may be applied towards the cost of this program!
 
While we provide some related resources on the Financial Aid section of the Education Abroad website, please consult with the Office of Financial Aid for information on and questions related to eligibility, disbursement, and applying for aid. 

Scholarships

There are many scholarships available to students that can be applied towards studying abroad. Any scholarships listed in the “Potential Scholarship Opportunities” in the Fact Sheet at the top of this brochure are suggestions and do not necessarily represent the full extent of funding opportunities for this program, nor applicants’ individual eligibility for those scholarships.
 
Please visit the scholarships section of the OEA website for information on scholarship types, eligibility requirements, due dates, the application process, and disbursement. Students are also encouraged to reach out to their academic department on campus and any community organizations with which you may be associated to see if they offer any financial assistance to support students seeking an international education experience.

Office of Education Abroad Scholarships

Scholarships awarded by the Office of Education Abroad may not be applied towards spring or fall break study abroad programs. Please visit our website to explore other scholarships opportunities for this program.  

Financial Aid and Scholarship Considerations

Students may be able to defer the program payments, with the exception of the deposit (refer to the payment schedule in the program Budget Sheet), until aid is received. However, many costs associated with the program, such as airfare and program deposits, may need to be paid before the semester of the study abroad and thus before receipt of financial aid funds. Students are responsible for researching when aid will be disbursed, for how much aid they are eligible, and when payments for the program, flights, and on-site expenses will be incurred. You need to feel comfortable paying for the program given ALL of your financial resources, not just financial aid and scholarships.
  • Financial aid eligibility and disbursement timelines are determined by Federal law and controlled by the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Applying for financial aid/scholarships or requesting a deferment for financial aid does not guarantee eligibility or receipt of such financial assistance.
  • If you are eligible for financial aid or receive a scholarship to help with the cost of this program, the funds you receive may NOT be sufficient to cover the full extent of all costs associated with your program.
  • While financial aid and scholarship awards are typically disbursed at the start of the semester of the study abroad program, disbursement dates should be confirmed on an individual basis with Financial Aid, Student Accounts, NinerScholars and/or the scholarship organizer.
  • Your funds will typically first be diverted to Student Accounts at UNC Charlotte to cover the cost of any applicable tuition & fees or balances owed to other departments.
  • Any remaining funds you have available will then be disbursed directly to you.
  • It will be your responsibility to keep track of and use any financial assistance funds disbursed to you to make remaining program payments.
    • When you participate in a faculty-led program, these funds will NOT be sent directly to the OEA to cover your study abroad balance.

All students should thoroughly research the cost of living and the exchange rate of the destination(s) in relation to their financial resources in order to develop a personal budget and make an informed financial decision on moving forward with the program.

Withdrawal Policy

The Office of Education Abroad makes every attempt to create meaningful and affordable study abroad programs for students. When you confirm your intent to participate in a program by submitting an application fee and deposit, the Education Abroad office begins to make financial commitments on your behalf, both administratively on campus and also to our international partners.  Therefore, it is our policy that if a student withdraws from a study abroad program, the application fee and initial deposit are non-refundable. With this in mind, please review the full program description and costs thoroughly, and consider carefully whether you are prepared to commit to an Education Abroad program before submitting your application fee and deposit.
 
If you withdraw after making subsequent program payments, UNC Charlotte may consider a partial or full refund of such payments for committed expenditures (not including non-refundable application fee and deposit) made on your behalf, to the extent such funds are recoverable from our partners/providers.  Partial or full refunds of subsequent payments are not guaranteed upon withdrawal. Requests for such refunds must be made in writing to the Office of Education Abroad no later than 30 days prior to program start date (the day the program leaves Charlotte). For emergency withdrawals within 30 days prior to the program start date or during the program, refunds in any amount are highly unlikely. Please note that in some cases, refund amounts may not be known until sometime after the program’s end date.  
 
Students who participate in a program but who choose not to participate in a particular activity for which they have paid in advance, whether that activity is mandatory or non-mandatory to the program (e.g. field trip, excursions, cultural event, etc.), will not be refunded any portion of that activity cost.

Application Process

Students applying for UNC Charlotte short-term faculty-led programs are not required to meet with an Education Abroad Advisor in order to open an application. Students may apply for more than one program, but will have to pay the non-refundable $10.00 application fee for every application submitted. Students may only participate in one Spring Break program per year.
 
Please keep in mind that because this program operates on a rolling admissions basis and has limited spots available, the program may fill up before the application deadline or the final confirmation deadline. Interested students are encouraged to complete the application process as soon as possible: 
  1. Complete Study Abroad 101 (strongly recommended)
  2. Review the Steps to Study Abroad, faculty-led program information, scholarship resources, and other resources on the OEA website
  3. Review all tabs of this brochure thoroughly
  4. Reference the UNC Charlotte catalog or discuss your study abroad plans with your academic advisor to ensure you understand how the credit you will receive will fit into your curriculum requirements
  5. Contact the Faculty Director leading the program of interest with program-specific questions
  6. Click the "Apply Now" button at the top of the program brochure page to begin your application
    • If this button does not appear, the program is not currently accepting applications
  7. Follow all application instructions and review all application resources carefully to complete your application and click “Submit” as soon as possible before the final application deadline

Application Review and Decision

  1. Once complete, the OEA will review your application to confirm that you meet the basic academic and disciplinary eligibility requirements of the program
  2. If you are eligible for the program, the OEA will pass your application on to the Faculty Director for final review
  3. The Faculty Director will make your final admissions decision
  4. The OEA will notify you of your admissions decision by email within 2-3 weeks after you submit your application

Confirming Your Participation

If accepted into the program, students are not considered program participants unless they confirm their intent to participate in the program by completing BOTH of the following steps in the study abroad portal either by no later than the confirmation deadline indicated in the program’s payment schedule or before the program meets its maximum capacity:
  • Submit the non-refundable deposit (must be paid in full by listed confirmation deadline)
  • Read and electronically sign the “Participant Agreement”
Once the OEA confirms completion of both confirmation steps, your application status will change to “Confirmed.” Only students listed as status “Confirmed” have held their spot in the program and are considered program participants.
 
This program operates on a rolling admissions basis and may fill up before the final confirmation deadline. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the confirmation steps as soon as possible after they are approved and by no later than the confirmation deadline.
 
Students should not submit program payments beyond the deposit nor make formal travel arrangements until such time as their application status shows “Confirmed” AND they receive email notification from the OEA that they are clear to do so. Additional information on the confirmation process is available in the application.

Next Steps

The OEA will send applicants listed as the “Confirmed” status next steps information via email within 3 weeks after the final confirmation deadline.
While they await next steps information, confirmed participants should:
  • NOT make payments beyond the deposit nor make formal travel arrangements until they receive this next steps information from the OEA in the weeks following the confirmation deadline.
  • Review the resources on the OEA website and within their study abroad application to help prepare for international travel
  • Review entry requirements and apply for a valid passport as soon as possible
  • Learn as much as possible about the program destination! Familiarize yourself with its history, government, language, culture, currency, time-keeping, and current events.
Confirmed participants will have additional items to complete in their study abroad portal/application before departure, such as attending the mandatory pre-departure orientation. Please note that UNC Charlotte will coordinate with a third party organization, ISP, to organize certain arrangements of this program. Confirmed participants should note that ISP may also request that participants provide certain information or documentation to facilitate program arrangements.

Reviewing and Signing Application Documents

During each phase of the study abroad process, students will be asked to review and electronically sign various agreements and policy understandings. Signatures on these documents are considered legally binding and signal that the applicant has read, understood, and agreed to the outlined policies. If you do not read these documents before signing, you are still held responsible for your understanding and adherence to the policies they outline. Beyond this responsibility, it is within your best interest to review all materials carefully – these documents answer many questions that students have about the study abroad process.

Withdrawal Policy

Any requests to withdraw after confirming your intent to participate in the program will need to be made to the OEA by email. Please review the withdrawal policy and financial implications of withdrawal under the “Finances” tab of this brochure.

Travel Insurance

The Office of Education Abroad highly recommends the purchase of travel insurance (also known as cancellation insurance) should personal or global circumstances prevent your participation in the program. You are encouraged to consider obtaining travel insurance and to keep in mind that many travel insurance policies must be purchased within twenty-one days of your initial deposit to apply to the program.

Passports and Immigration Requirements

All participants are individually responsible for ensuring that they have the appropriate documentation to obtain entry clearance to their host country. General information about passports and immigration requirements (including visas) is available on the OEA website.
 
Please note that the Office of Education Abroad is legally unable to advise on visas policies and procedures.

Health and Safety

The safety of our students and faculty traveling abroad is of the utmost importance to the Office of Education Abroad and UNC Charlotte. Current events are monitored constantly and OEA is in direct contact with students and on-site constituencies in the event of an international emergency. The OEA will work with UNC Charlotte risk managers, on-site staff, the U.S. Department of State and our international insurance provider to determine the best course of action to keep students safe in the event of an emergency abroad.
All study abroad participants are enrolled in mandatory international health insurance which covers a range of medical issues, support services, and evacuation in case of emergency. We also advise that student’s take the responsibility to do their own research in preparation for international travel. We want students and their families to feel comfortable with travel plans prior to departure. Helpful resources include:

LGBTQ+ Travelers

It is important to keep in mind that other cultures around the world may have different attitudes and laws regarding LGBTQ+ individuals. LGBTQ+ students interested or participating in this program should familiarize themselves with the attitudes of the destination country and may wish to explore the following resources:

Studying Abroad with a Disability

Many students with disabilities study abroad each year; however, it is important to keep in mind that other cultures may have different attitudes and varying accommodations and laws regarding disabilities.

If you are a student who has a learning or physical disability, and you are interested in studying abroad, please disclose any requested accommodations to the OEA as soon as possible so that we can begin working with you and the UNC Charlotte Office of Disability Services to see if and how we are able to meet your needs. 

To prepare for success, students are encouraged to begin researching the desired host country and consider how they will manage their disabilities abroad well in advance of selecting a program. There are many resources available to students with disabilities who are considering studying abroad. If accommodation on a desired program is not possible or advisable, we will do our best to help you find an alternate program to ensure you are able to engage in a study abroad experience.

Faculty Director

The program’s Faculty Director is the UNC Charlotte faculty member who will teach the course tied to the program and lead the program abroad. They will be with students on site for the duration of the program, will be responsible for the academic piece of the program, and will be students’ best resource for assistance in country. The Faculty Director can answer questions about the program’s academics, site visits on the ground, and the day-to-day cultural and program expectations on-site.

The Office of Education Abroad works with students and faculty prior to departure to manage the application process, collect program materials, communicate with students, and provide preparation resources prior to study abroad. The OEA staff can answer questions about the application process, general program arrangements, required study abroad materials, making payments, and general travel resources and logistics.
